quite a move to make.. from the mafia to the priesthood... but i don't think katchoo would let him go so easy... and david had turned down the temptation of going back into the mafia, so my bets are on that he died. i don't want him to be dead tho... but sometimes you can love a character so much, all this secrecy and mystery around him. he pop up every so often and he's barely open a lot of times. we know so few t5hings about him... and sometimes, all that mystery is good... makes you think, "what will we learn about him next? what will he do next? and how would he react if he knew this or that?" hopefully, we'd find out more about him before he starts walking into the grave...
um... we will learn more about him before whatever fate befalls david, will we terry? right?

After going back and rereading every single ish of SiP upon my return from San Diego, I noticed that upon the opening of Volume 3, David does not reappear in the flashforwards with Katchoo and Francine. In fact when Francine mentions David to Katchoo, I think Katchoo says they were married for a while but then does not really elaborate on his absence.
My theories here (feel free to argue with me fervently if you like) is that David's headaches, seen randomly in the latter issues of Vol. 3, do him in. Brain tumor? Aneurysm? Whatever it is, this thing gives him years to marry Katchoo, but possibly not enough time to see Francine again. What do you all think?
As it were, my friend Julie kicked me in the shins and called me blasphemous at the idea of David being dead.

We had that debate going on a while back....
either he's dead, or he's back with the mafia.

Or he left Katchoo to join the pristhood...
The flash forward shows us that he and Katchoo had what appears to be a peaceful marriage. In that it left Katchoo with a peaceful feeling.
But the flash forward also shows us that Katchoo is hurt by his absence. Which leaves several possibilities. He died. He left her for whatever reason. She left him over something that hurt her.
Popular money is on the dead angle. But I can see him leaving her to go to the church. "Hey sweetie, marriage was nice, but you don't fulfill me..."

So I asked him what was wrong, and he said, "My shoes are too tight, but it doesn't matter, because I have forgotten how to dance." I never understood what that meant until now. Ah the great SiP mystery...and people say that David doesn't play an intergral role to the story...

No, we say that SiP is not about David and he's is just a supporting character.

Hey, if not for Han, who would have shot those TIE fighters offa Luke's back?
David IS important, but just in a Han Solo sorta way...

Several times when Francine and Katchoo are sharing a moment, David barges in, ringing a doorbell or handing out tamales. One can understand Katchoo's hitting him in frustration. It's tempting to say that if it weren't for him, Francine and Katchoo would have gotten a Vermont civil partnership years ago, and end of story. But at a couple of critical points David is absent and they still blow it. One is the night of Francine's first day of work with RBK&S. Another is "The Fight of the Century." This puts the tamale incident in perspective. Francine is using David to avoid commitment to Katchoo. And Katchoo is using David to make Francine jealous.
If David did not exist, Darcy would still have come after Katchoo. Wayne at least would have led her to Katchoo. Francine would still have been endangered. But without David, Mike would not have been able to find Katchoo in New York. Without David, Katchoo would hardly been able to find Francine in Hana. Without David, Katchoo wouldn't have that little house on the beach.

Actually, I always thought that in some way David was the title character, (i.e., the "stranger" in paradise (Katchoo's and Francine's).
Sort of the way the show Cheers was actually about Norm ("where everybody knows your name") even though most of the drama occurred around him.
